The company was established in December 2007 following a strong desire to start production of broodstock and roe in North Norway, while at the same time seeing a need to ensure production and delivery to the industry in general. Salten Stamfisk works closely with Salmobreed AS and has since 2009 had a license agreement for the production of the Salmobreed strain.
In-sea production takes place in Skjerstadfjorden, where the company has permission for production at 7 locations, co-locating with Wenberg Fiskeoppdrett AS and Edelfarm AS. During the stocking phase, the company rents the capacity of Salten Smolt AS. In 2015, Salten Stamfisk AS and Salmobreed AS entered into an even closer cooperation through the establishment of Salmobreed Salten AS. Through this company an innovative and forward-looking onshore facility for the production of broodstock and roe, was built during 2017 and 2018. Located in Sørfjorden in Sørfold Municipality, this is the first facility in the world to breed salmon with the entire lifecycle being land based.
Salten Stamfisk was awarded 2 broodstock concessions in July 2009 and produces line fish, test fish and marked fish during the in-sea phase.
